Surgical Oncology

What is a surgical oncologist?

A surgical oncologist is a general surgeon who has received extra training in surgically treating patients with cancer diagnoses. All surgical oncologists who perform surgeries at Parkview have received one to three years of specialty fellowship training in cancer surgery. This additional training gives the surgeon the ability to more accurately stage and treat the cancer, which gives the patient a more favorable outcome.  A surgical oncologist will often work with medical and radiation oncologists to treat a cancer.
