Surgical Oncology

What is a surgical oncologist?

A surgical oncologist is a general surgeon who has received extra training in surgically treating patients with cancer diagnoses. All surgical oncologists who perform surgeries at Parkview have received one to three years of specialty fellowship training in cancer surgery. This additional training gives the surgeon the ability to more accurately stage and treat the cancer, which gives the patient a more favorable outcome.  A surgical oncologist will often work with medical and radiation oncologists to treat a cancer.

Why would I see a surgical oncologist?

Research shows that patients who consult with a surgeon that specializes in cancer care can improve outcomes. A cancer diagnosis may seem simple, but the cases are often complex.  Parkview surgical oncologists have access to advanced technology, clinical trials, and a wide variety of approaches to treat difficult cancer cases.  Any patient who has been diagnosed or thinks they may have cancer should see a surgical oncologist.

What technologies does a surgical oncologist use?

In addition, the Pathfinder intra-operative navigation system allows surgeons to see inside the liver during surgery, guiding the surgeon around major structures to help completely remove tumors. This technology allows the maximum amount of normal liver to remain.

Ablation technology allows the surgeon to kill liver tumors that are not appropriate for surgical removal. This offers a significant improvement over previous technologies because it allows large tumors to be ablated and cuts patients’ time in the operating room in half.
