Frequently asked questions

Why EpicCare EMR?

Epic is a privately owned company with more than 30 years of experience in the EMR business. Epic has a full suite of clinical, access, revenue and web software designed for the unique needs of health care providers. The company is a leader in standards development for health technology. Epic does not sell directly to individual physician offices. The software is available only through a local Epic hub organization, such as Parkview Health.

The EpicCare EMR provides a complete patient record and is considered the industry's leading EMR. EpicCare has been named by KLAS as the #1 Ambulatory EMR for 11 years running. Epic receives high rankings for physician satisfaction. Eight Epic clients have won the coveted Davies Award for their use of EpicCare to help improve patient safety, increase efficiency and provide more cost-effective health care. Currently, about one-third of the U.S. population has an Epic chart.

Why Epic?

In 2011, when Parkview Health selected Epic as its choice for a patient-centered, community-based EMR, Epic had been earning certifications, awards and recognition for several years from numerous organizations.

Highlights include:

  • EMR Certification for Meaningful Use

Epic’s EpicCare EMR solutions for acute care hospitals, ambulatory practices and health information exchange have been tested and certified under the CCHIT Electronic Health Records Office of the National Coordinator Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB) program. This EHR software is compliant in accordance with the criteria adopted by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

  • HIMSS Davies Award

Epic customers hold more HIMSS Davies awards than any other vendor's clients. They've also been recognized by the Joint Commission/National Quality Forum and CHIME for their use of Epic in initiatives to improve patient care.

  • KLAS Rankings

KLAS bases its reports on thousands of healthcare specialists who actively use EMR and Practice Management solutions. For the past 36 years, KLAS has been measuring vendor performance to provide accurate information about HIT (health information technology). Epic has again been named the #1 Overall Software Vendor for 2023 by KLAS* and we consistently earn high ratings for customer satisfaction, response times and promises kept.

  • HIMSS Analytics Stage 7 Award
  • The EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM) identifies and scores hospitals using an 8-step scale that charts the path to a fully paperless environment.

    • 85% of Stage 7 US Hospitals use EpicCare.
    • 91% of Stage 7 Clinics use EpicCare.

For our region's physicians and practitioners to achieve their goals in managing the population health in our communities by fostering more meaningful partnerships in healthcare between clinicians and patients, tested and proven tools are needed as Epic sits at the top. With a focus on quality, patient safety, security and appropriate clinical data sharing.

Does Epic endorse the Healthcare Industry Software Developer Code of Conduct?

Yes, Epic fully endorses and formally adopts the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Association's Developer Code of Conduct which encourages cooperative and transparent business practices among industry stakeholders. Epic has had a long history of embracing the Code's key values and practices including: responsible development, patient safety, interoperability and data portability, clinical and billing accuracy, privacy and security and patient engagement. We are proud to have participated in the Code's creation and to stand alongside our fellow EHR developers in demonstrating mutual support for safe, interoperable innovation.  Several key industry leaders have publicly made supportive comments about this Code, including Farzad Mostashari from ONC, Michael Barr, MD from the ACP and Jeff Smith from CHIME.
