What is pre-admission testing?
Pre-admission testing is an important part of helping you to prepare for surgery. Your doctor will refer you to this service, and you will receive a telephone call in the days leading up to surgery. Pre-admission testing nurses will:
- Tell you about your surgery.
- Explain what to expect before your surgery.
- Explain how to prepare for your surgery.
- Give you important tips on how to recover quicker.
- Ask you detailed questions about medical and surgical history.
- Explain how to prepare for discharge from the hospital.
- Schedule one appointment in a single location for any necessary lab work, EKGs and other tests.
- Provide you with a special soap to shower with before your surgery.
Is pre-admission testing the same as pre-registration?
No. While some of the questions may be the same, they do not serve the same purpose. It is important to both pre-register and go to pre-admission testing.
What can I expect during the appointment?
While some information may be gathered over the phone, depending on the type of surgery or procedure, you may be asked to come in for an appointment. It is important that you bring a list of medications with you, including the name of the medication, how much you take, how often you take it and the last time you took the medication. You may also be required to complete lab work or other tests during your appointment. You will have time to ask any questions that you may have regarding your surgery. This appointment typically lasts one to two hours.
