Lung Cancer Screening

SmartLung CT scans can detect lung cancer early

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Because this cancer often presents no noticeable early symptoms, by the time it’s diagnosed, it’s often in advanced stages. Findings from a large clinical trial showed that lung CT scans reduced lung cancer deaths among smokers by detecting cancer earlier so it can be treated more effectively. This is why it’s so important to show up for your lung cancer screening.

What can I expect with a SmartLung CT scan?

All Parkview hospitals offer low-dose chest CT scans called SmartLung CT. Taking only 15 minutes, a SmartLung CT is a simple, noninvasive scan that can detect lung cancer in its early stages.

Screening guidelines

How do SmartLung CT scans work?

SmartLung CT lung screening is a non-invasive, painless procedure that uses low-dose X-rays to screen the lungs for cancer. A CT lung screening allows the radiologist to look at different levels, or “slices,” of the lungs. The highly detailed images can often reveal (non-cancerous) abnormalities or lung cancer.

How do you schedule a SmartLung CT scan?

Speak with your physician about obtaining a SmartLung CT as part of your overall health program. Your doctor can write an order for the scan, help you schedule it and provide follow-up as necessary. A SmartLung CT scan is also available for individuals who meet the screening guidelines.

What happens after a lung cancer screening?
After a lung cancer screening, you can go back to your usual activities right away. The results of your CT scan will be sent to your doctor. Someone from your care team will explain the results of your scan and answer any questions you may have. If you need any follow-up, this person will help you understand what to do next.
Where is Parkview's SmartLung CT available?

The SmartLung CT scan is available at all Parkview hospitals and outpatient sites that provide CT scanning services.

How much does a SmartLung CT scan cost?

The $99 cost of a SmartLung CT may be covered by insurance with a physician’s referral. Please check with your insurance provider to find out whether this test is included under your coverage.
