Advanced Screening Options for Earlier Diagnosis

All cancer begins at the cellular level, including lung cancer. When a build-up of cells forms a mass of tissue in the lungs, called a growth or tumor, lung cancer can occur.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. Unfortunately, lung cancer is often quite advanced before symptoms indicate a problem exists. Early detection and diagnosis is an important way to ensure better long-term health.

A large clinical trial showed promising results for early lung cancer detection using CT scan screenings. A CT scan is a computer-generated look at many X-ray scans taken at multiple angles. The clinical trial revealed that lung CT scan screenings reduced lung cancer deaths among smokers by detecting cancer earlier so it can be treated more effectively.

At Parkview Cancer Institute, we offer low-dose chest CT scans called SmartLung CT. Taking only 15 minutes, a SmartLung CT is a simple and noninvasive scan that can detect lung cancer in its early stages. We recommend a SmartLung CT scan if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are between the ages of 55 and 77
  • AND are a current smoker
  • OR quit smoking within the last 15 years and have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or two packs per day for 15 years

With earlier detection, our lung cancer team can get started on your treatment right away.

A Personalized Approach to Lung Cancer Treatment

We work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that will be most effective for your cancer. There are several procedures and treatments used for lung cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Parkview Heath is home to the region’s only CyberKnife® technology. Radiation can be difficult to perform because a lung tumor moves as you breathe. Our CyberKnife system precisely identifies the tumor location and can be used to treat you painlessly and noninvasively.

When surgery is required, we use noninvasive techniques as often as possible to reduce scarring, pain and recovery time. We’ve also invested in new state-of-the-art infusion bays for those who need chemotherapy. This gives each patient a private and comfortable space to receive the drug infusion.
