Frequently asked questions

What is primary care?

Primary care provides patients with comprehensive and routine healthcare services and is often the first point of contact for patients seeking medical care. Typically, primary care providers establish long-term relationships with their patients and offer preventative care, routine check-ups and screenings and help with the management of common illnesses and chronic conditions. At Parkview, three specialties fall under primary care: family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics.

What is family medicine?

Family medicine focuses on the broad care of individuals of all ages, from newborns to the elderly. Family medicine providers can diagnose and treat a wide variety of health conditions for the whole family, ranging from influenza to migraines to minor sprains to depression and anxiety.

What is internal medicine?

Internal medicine focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases in adults. Internal medicine providers (also called internists) facilitate a wide range of services such as annual wellness exams, routine chronic care visits and same-day sick visits. They also coordinate care between patients and specialists for complex conditions and chronic illnesses. Internists commonly address conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, chronic lung disease and hypertension.

What is pediatric primary care?

Pediatric primary care focuses on the health, growth and development of children and adolescents. In addition to routine wellness exams and vaccinations, pediatric primary care providers also treat allergies, upper respiratory infections, ear infections, headaches and migraines, fevers and many other conditions in children and adolescents.

How can I find a primary care provider at Parkview?

Finding a provider is easy with our Find-a-Doctor search function on Parkivew.com. You can search by name, specialty, address and more. You can also visit the main Primary Care page and click to schedule an appointment with a provider that is accepting new patients in the specialty you need.

Why should I have a primary care provider?

Choosing a primary care doctor or advanced practice provider is very important. The relationship you have with your health care provider greatly influences the health decisions you make and, ultimately, your health. A strong partnership with your provider is key to getting great care. Your primary care provider is also your avenue to specialty referrals and other services you may require.
