Joint replacement surgery is a common orthopedic approach to improving quality of life. Sometimes, however, these devices can become infected. When orthopedic implanted devices become infected, they usually do so with microorganisms that require aggressive surgical and medical intervention. There are several approaches that orthopedic surgical specialists have available, usually in conjunction with antimicrobial therapy.
