Three tools to quit today

This year, November 15 is designated as the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Great American Smokeout®. Why is it so important? According to the ACS, more than 34 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, making it the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. In fact, smoking is responsible for 1 in 5 deaths in our country. If you’re considering giving up the habit today, or in the weeks to come, consider these helpful pointers that just might set you up for success.

1. Take the quiz

This helpful quiz can gauge your readiness to quit. Based on stages of change, the research-based tool can identify the stage you’re in and offer guidance on the next practical step.

2. Gather resources

Once you’ve made the decision to quit, it’s important to establish a plan. Parkview offers free smoking cessation classes to help you through your journey. For a full list of upcoming dates and locations, to register for classes or for more information, contact Parkview Center for Healthy Living at (260) 266-6500.

3. Assemble cheerleaders

As you work through this process, it’s valuable to establish a strong support system of loved ones, coworkers and friends. Communicate how they can help you and lean on them when necessary.

Remember, we’re all cheering for you. When you’re having a weak moment, watch this video, grab a friend and go for a walk, or try a little mindfulness. You can do this. Stick with it!
