Blood donors

To mark World Blood Donor Day, we’re celebrating a pair of Parkview co-workers who consistently participate in this life-saving act.

I don’t know when I first began donating blood, but 1991 is the earliest I have in my notes.

Early in our marriage, my husband and I would go to the Red Cross donation center on California Road on Saturday mornings. I think initially it was the idea of a date with my husband and free donuts.

At one time the Red Cross told me I had the type of blood they could give to infants, so that really inspired me to donate. At Parkview, we get a free lunch ticket and the ability to give during our workday, which is greatly appreciated.

If you’re scared, I can tell you that the worst part is always when the tech inserts the needle. Just look the other way and breathe deeply. The ouch goes away quickly and you’re on your way to helping others!

I can't even remember when I first donated. Probably in my 20s, because it seemed like something simple I could do to help others.
