Lauren Smead, esthetician, Parkview Center for Healthy Living, offers some great facial ideas to help you take some time for yourself and keep your skincare routine going during this time of social distancing.

Whether you are tuning into the news or scrolling through social media throughout the day, it’s easy to get lost in everything going on around us. During this time, it’s important to not forget the simple things you can do to protect your overall health. This is an opportunity to slow down. Make time to unwind, exercise, practice self-care rituals you wouldn’t normally have time for and be mindful to support your immune system.

As an esthetician, there are times when I find myself not practicing what I preach. There are steps in my skincare regimen that are lacking. During this time, I’m choosing to be intentional in carving out time to put extra effort into my facial routine.

Whether you are combating dry, oily or dull skin, there are simple things you can do to help. Below are several DIY facial recipes infused with essential oils for the skin that you can try.

Note: Before each facial, be sure to cleanse your entire face first, and follow each application with your favorite moisturizer.

Facial for dry skin

Use this moisturizing mask to give your skin a drink.

¼ ripe avocado
1 teaspoon honey
1 teaspoon coconut oil or jojoba oil
2 drops helichrysum essential oil (chamomile, rose or jasmine essential oils will also work)

  1. Mash the avocado until it has a very smooth consistency.
  2. Combine the avocado and the additional ingredients and mash well.
  3. Spread the mask over your face and neck. Leave on for 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water and follow with a moisturizer.

Facial for oily skin

Use this gel to combat oiliness without over-drying your skin.

5 tablespoons organic aloe vera gel
20 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil

  1. Combine the aloe vera gel with the essential oils.
  2. Once the mixture is blended, apply a small amount to the face. (This solution can also be applied under a moisturizer, as a serum.)
  3. Store any leftovers in an airtight glass container for up to two weeks.

Facial for dull skin

Use this exfoliating cleanser to remove dead skin and get glowing.

1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon coconut or jojoba oil
5 drops geranium essential oil (lavender, rosehip and sandalwood essential oils will also work)

  1. Slowly combine baking soda with liquid coconut oil or jojoba oil. Stir until the mixture is consistently white in color.
  2. Stir in the essential oil.
  3. Gently rub a small amount of the mixture into your face for 30 – 60 seconds.
  4. Rinse and apply moisturizer.
