Catching up with Curtis (January ’19)

The latest from Curtis Smith, Corporate Director of Community Engagement.

As it probably does for all of you, for obvious reasons, January always has a sense of newness.  This year, for me, it feels even more like a fresh start.

As I wrote in December, my former leader, Sue Ehinger retired from Parkview. I am now reporting to Dena Jacquay, Parkview’s Chief Community and Human Resource Officer, and my title has changed. I am now the Corporate Director of Community Engagement.  I am very excited about these changes.

Like Sue, Dena is passionate about people and our community. She works tirelessly to help people both inside and outside of Parkview. I’d like to think I do the same thing, so it is a great fit to be under her leadership.

In my new role, I oversee the work of several new (to me) areas: Chaplaincy and Volunteer Services, Advance Care Planning and Parkview’s quarterly Leadership Development Institute (LDI) events. Actually, we already had our first LDI, and I thought it was great! I am still leading our Patient Advocate teams and very active in Community Outreach. My plate is full, but crowded with things I love. I am so blessed that Parkview gives me the opportunity to impact people’s lives!

Of course, January was a busy month of community events, too. I emceed a number of wonderful events, including Parkview’s “Healthy Business Matters”, Associated Churches’ “God at Work”, Crosswinds’ “Jazzin’ Up January”, and the annual fundraiser for Camp PossAbility. I also appeared on Star 88.3 with Melissa Montana and welcomed Parkview’s first new hires of 2019 with a welcome from our executive team. Perhaps the highlight of January came on the last Sunday of the month, when I delivered the sermon for Many Nations Church of the Nazarene. It was my first ever sermon with a translator. It was fun to hear my message in Spanish!

January was a busy month and seemed to fly by faster than most. I’m excited to see what February brings (hopefully it will bring some warmer weather, too).
