flaxseeds

This post was written by Thomas Arend, dietitian, Parkview Health.

For those looking to consume more whole, nourishing foods, it’s worth incorporating flaxseed. In this post, we discuss the health benefits, shelf life and ways to consume them.

What are the health benefits of flaxseed?

  • Fiber – Important for blood sugar control and cardiovascular health.
  • ALA – An Omega 3 essential fatty acid. Your body must convert ALA to use it. Conversion is limited, especially for those who aren’t premenopausal females. It is still recommended you get omega 3s from other sources.
  • Phytonutrients – Provide antioxidant effects.

Is it safe to consume flaxseed every day?

Yes! A safe amount depends on how much fiber you can tolerate. Like with any high-fiber source, you should increase your intake gradually to see how your body responds.

Like many other seeds, flax contains cyanide. Thankfully, our bodies can handle the small amount within them, but if you attempt to consume cups of flaxseed you may approach a lethal amount. Flaxseed also can contain heavy metals, specifically cadmium. If you are eating flax regularly or pregnant, you should ensure the brand you are purchasing is not high in cadmium.

What are some ways to enjoy flaxseed?

Flaxseeds can be a great way to add fiber and nutrients to baked goods, like breads, pancakes and cookies. They can also be directly added to smoothies and yogurt.

Are flax seeds the same as chia seeds?

No, but they do have similar uses and health benefits. Chia seeds are generally lower in cadmium than flax seeds.

What is the best way to keep flaxseed fresh?

It’s best to store flaxseed in a sealed container. If you’re using ground flaxseed, place them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.

Flax seeds can last months if not years when stored properly, but when ground they can spoil in a week if stored improperly. Moisture and exposure to heat and air can reduce their shelf life.
