Tower update

It was almost two years ago when Parkview Health announced plans to invest in the Parkview Regional Medical Center (PRMC) campus. This consisted of an expansion plan and construction of a six-story, 168,000-square-foot medical tower. The new tower will allow the hospital to add 72 new inpatient beds and 100 new clinical positions, with roughly 63,000 square feet of additional space. This surplus will not only allow for future expansion plans but will also continue to support projected inpatient demand and ambulatory care growth.

“The number of people who choose Parkview for their care continues to rise. We have deployed many initiatives to best meet these growing needs, including investments that have allowed for increased capacity at PRMC and Parkview Hospital Randallia. However, we find our Allen County inpatient bed capacity is insufficient to meet this growing demand," Mike Packnett, president and CEO, Parkview Health, said.

As winter turns to spring, it’s evident that construction of the new tower is progressing, despite the ever-changing Midwestern weather. The tower’s main roof was completed at the end of November and service elevators were installed this month. The exterior of the building is projected to be completed in April 2020, with hopes of moving into the sixth floor by October.

With what seems like a laundry list of materials, including but not limited to, 51,500 bricks, 17,982 square feet of carpet, 5,905 cubic yards of concrete and 452 doors, it’s easy to quantify the enormity of such a project. The tower will measure a few inches shy of 130 feet tall and the roof will measure 27,100 square feet. While these numbers do well in measuring the physicality of the building, they fall short in illustrating the profound impact this addition will have on those who will utilize it.

Ben Miles, president, PRMC & Affiliates, conveyed the sentiment best. “I look forward to the day when we can open the first unit in the expanded tower. While we can attach numbers and statistics to the tower expansion project, we can’t quantify the difference we’ll make in the lives of the people we’ll serve there when it is complete – that’s immeasurable!”
