Three reasons to attend Focus on Health

Family Medicine, Community

If we were to look at the keys to a longer, healthier life, they would include:

  • Health education
  • Prevention
  • Early diagnosis/treatment of health concerns prior to developing symptoms
  • Disease management to prevent progression

Health fairs, such as Parkview Focus on Health and Parkview Center for Healthy Living Check-up Days, provide general information about good health and preventative medicine, offer affordable lab work and free health screenings such as blood pressure, height/weight/BMI, vision, foot screening, hearing screening and bone density to name a few. These options may detect a health concern and encourage participants, working in conjunction with their health care provider, to get on track to a healthier self.

If you’re considering attending an upcoming Focus on Health event, here are three convincing arguments to consider.

Reason No. 1 – Cost savings

Many of the same blood tests you find at a health fair would likely cost hundreds of dollars outside of this opportunity. This is a great option for those without insurance, limited coverage or those with a high deductible. Many just prefer the convenience of selecting Wellness Packages or individual tests as part of their personal wellness journey to see if healthier lifestyle options are having an impact, such as lowering their blood sugar, lipids, etc.  All lab results are sent directly to participants by mail and made available within 24 hours through personal electronic medical records (i.e. Parkview MyChart). Besides the affordable lab work and free health screenings, multiple exhibitors offer a variety of valuable health related information.

Reason No. 2 – Awareness + Early diagnosis

These are important health markers for people who might not “know their numbers”.  The ability to access information provides the tools needed to empower participants to take responsibility and control of their own life and future.  So many diseases are silent—high blood pressure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), etc. Participants are always encouraged to share all of their test results with their health care provider so the information can be applied to them personally in light of their personal and family health history.

Reason No. 3 – Prevention

They always say the best defense is a good offense, and that goes double for your health. When it comes to staying healthy, prevention is key. That means talking to your health care provider about health tests. Being informed and aware of your body, even when it's healthy, is one of the easiest ways to actively participate in managing your health.
