Help us reduce the maternal mortality for underrepresented mothers
The Healthy Mom and Baby Pitch Competition 2.0 will be held as a virtual event on December 15.
Parkview Health, in collaboration with MATTER, is proud to present the Healthy Mom and Baby Innovation Competition 2.0. In this global call, we are seeking product, software, and program solutions that have the potential to reduce the incidence of maternal mortality and improve the health and wellbeing of mothers and infants.
Specifically, we will focus on:
How might we better support at-risk pregnant and new mothers throughout their healthcare journey as well as in their daily lives?
Our Focus
While the past 30 years have witnessed great improvements in medical treatment options for maternal and infant care, maternal mortality continues to be a challenge both in developed and developing regions of the world.
Maternal mortality is the death of a woman while pregnant or within one year of the end of pregnancy, regardless of length or site of pregnancy, due to a cause related to or made worse by the pregnancy or its management.
The US continues to see higher per-capita maternal deaths. Women in the U.S. are the most likely to die from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. In 2018, there were 17 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births in the U.S. — a ratio more than double that of most other high-income countries.1
Wide racial/ethnic inequities exist for mothers of color, with black mothers over double the maternal mortality rate of non-hispanic white mothers. (37.3 compared with 14.9 per 100,000 deaths)2
It is well documented that the conditions in which people live, work, grow, learn and play, also known as the social determinants of health, play a significant role in many of the health inequities we see today, including maternal and infant health. In Indiana, women with a high school degree/GED or less accounted for 65% of all pregnancy-associated deaths in 2018.3
The state of Indiana’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) states “Mortality is a key indicator for maternal health quality in Indiana. Each maternal death represents not just the loss of a woman’s life, but also the impact of that loss on her family and community.”4
According to the 2020 Maternal Deaths in Indiana report, the MMRC determined that 87% of reviewed pregnancy-associated deaths were preventable.3
These alarming numbers are calling Parkview and the state of Indiana to action.

Management Performance Hub Data
As part of the collaborative effort of this project, the State of Indiana’s Management Performance Hub has released 44 datasets containing state information on maternal and infant health. These datasets were developed in collaboration with the State Department of Health, Indiana’s Family and Social Services Administration, and the Regenstrief Institute. These datasets can be used by participants to aid in the analysis of the problem and to develop solutions. The datasets can be found at:

Teams in the 2019 Health Mom + Baby Datapalooza developed dashboards around the datasets. These can also be used by participants and can be found at:
