When it comes to stroke intervention, quicker is better. Shamir Haji, MD, PPG – Neurocritical Care, explains developments in stroke care, including clot-busting medication, which has to be administered in a time-sensitive fashion (within 4 hours from onset), and procedural treatments in which a provider can evaluate the brain and, if there is a blockage and salvageable tissue, go in and relieve the blockage. Time is brain; the longer you wait, the more brain damage occurs.

After a patient receives acute treatment for stroke, they will spend time in the Nuero ICU, an area that provides critical care services for neurologically ill patients. After a patient is released from the hospital, lifestyle modifications and education can minimize their risk of future stroke. This would include heart healthy living and proper nutrition.
