While many might view Pilates as a gentle, light workout, it’s benefits reach far beyond toning and tightening. With 20 years Pilates instructing experience between them, Amy Muha, PT, Parkview Therapy Services Ash Skyline, tell us more about the promising results Pilates is showing for those struggling with back, shoulder and hip pain, sports injuries and more.

Q. How is your certification different than the certification of an instructor at a local Pilates studio might have?

Our Pilates certifications are Comprehensive, meaning we can instruct patients on all the various Pilates apparatus. It’s a 12-18-month certification including observation, practice and teaching hours followed by a centralized test with a practical exam.

Pilates therapy services are different than regular Pilates classes. We are able to utilize our extensive knowledge to provide quality care in a unique environment.

Q. Who are the best candidates for Pilates-based physical therapy?

Patients with back pain/strain, shoulder pain/scapular instability, hip pain, or total knee issues. It’s also great for athletes for injury prevention or prior to returning to a sport after an injury.

Q. Are there benefits unique to Pilates physical therapy?

Pilates physical therapy will focus on the body as a whole and not just treating the isolated problem. Pilates focuses on placing the body in the most symmetrical and balanced position, therefore placing less stress on the body during daily activity or sport-specific activity. When the body is in a proper postural position it can absorb shock easier.

Q. How is the determination made if this is the right course of therapy for a patient?

If patients are having pain and need improvements in strength, muscle balance or posture, Pilates would be a beneficial course of treatment.

Q. How is Pilates therapy beneficial for scoliosis patients?

Pilates-based treatment for scoliosis is beneficial to help stretch the tight side of the curve and strengthen the weak side.  The Pilates exercises are based on balancing muscle groups around the spine, both by stretching and strengthening.  The patients will see results in improved posture and less pain.  It’s very beneficial for teenage girls.

Q. What should a patient do if they’re interested in starting a Pilates therapy program?

Pilates-based therapy can be requested by a patient to their physician or a patient can be seen directly by a physical therapist without a physician referral through the Direct Access Law. An evaluation will be done by a physical therapist to determine the most beneficial course of treatment.
