The latest from Curtis on Community Outreach

It's been well over a year since Curtis Smith joined the Parkview family. We get a lot of questions about what he's up to and where he'll be appearing next, so, in an effort to keep you connected with our Director of Community Outreach, we've invited Curtis to become a regular contributor to the Parkview Dashboard! He'll be stopping by more often to update readers on the latest initiatives he's working on and what's on the horizon. We get it! Sometimes it's just nice to see a familiar face. Here he sets the stage for the year ahead.

Community Outreach is a term that can mean many things. For an organization like Parkview Health, so many initiatives fall under this umbrella. As the Director of Community Outreach, I have the privilege and pleasure of connecting with a vast array of organizations and people throughout the Parkview footprint. That means one day I might stop by a small church, the next day a school, and then support a big event at the Parkview Mirro Center for Research and Innovation or Parkview Field after that. Recently, I interviewed the governor! You just never know what outreach will look like, and certainly no two days are alike.

This was true in my old job as well, though that could be attributed to the Indiana weather. That being said, there was repetition. I went to the same TV station and sat in the same weather center for 21 years. Now, I have to constantly check my calendar just to see what town I will be in next. Some days I go from Fort Wayne to Warsaw to Huntington to Kendallville. Wherever Parkview serves patients, we are there to forge deeper connections with those communities.

It’s easy to think about health in terms of the physical criteria, issues tended to by a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional. At Parkview, we view health with a more holistic perspective, choosing to focus on the mind, body and spirit. This takes a lot of time and effort, but the reward is great. When we build healthier communities, full of people living full and healthy lives, we all win.

This mindset falls under the even broader idea of being the best community partner and corporate citizen we can be. Parkview Health is the largest employer in Northeast Indiana, and we love the communities we serve. Because of that, we get to partner on many fun and innovative projects, programs and events. As we go through 2018, I am looking forward to sharing those connections with all of you, so you can get a better sense of all the unique things I am up to personally and that Parkview is involved with on a system level.

I hope it’s been a great new year for all of you so far and I can’t wait to catch up with you in the weeks ahead.
