With all of the special décor and entertaining the holidays bring, it’s important to remember that safety is still the most important thing. Captain Dave Meadows from the Safety Education Division of the Fort Wayne Fire Department shares what you need to know about carbon monoxide and smoke alarms during December, and all year long.
Carbon Monoxide.
“Often called the silent killer, carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely,” Captain Meadows said. “The Fort Wayne Fire Department urges you to follow these safety tips.”
Smoke Detectors.
“This holiday season, give your family the gift of safety and check your smoke detectors. Smoke alarms save lives,” Captain Meadows said. “Studies demonstrate that smoke alarms save more lives than any other fire prevention measure. They provide the earliest warning of both fire and smoke. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.” He offers the following points for maintaining your smoke detectors properly.
