microneedling

This post was written by Josie Trier, aesthetician, PPG – Dermatology, MD SkinCare.

Collagen and elastin production in our skin decreases over time, beginning in our early to mid-20s. Because of this un-timely slow in production, fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin begin to make an appearance. But don’t worry, there’s hope! A minimally invasive treatment called microneedling can help spark collagen production while preventing and correcting fine lines and wrinkles.

How it works

Microneedling uses a group of very fine, pinpoint needles to create precise microscopic punctures into the skin. When your body feels these nicks, it rushes to mend them by making your skin produce new collagen to “heal” itself. And, while microneedling helps to treat fine lines and wrinkles, it’s also great for correcting acne scarring, stretch marks and even surgical scars.

What to expect

Microneedling occurs in a series of treatments for optimal results. We recommend participating in at least 4-6 treatments, which take place one month apart. After a typical procedure, you can expect your skin to be fairly pink and/or red for at least 12 hours. The erythema, or superficial redness caused by irritation, generally diminishes significantly after 24 hours.

Additionally, with microneedling, there’s no need to stay home or take off from work. The aftereffects are like having a mild sunburn on your face. You can even wear makeup the following day if needed. Patients can also expect a before and after picture to be taken following each treatment. We do this so we can track your progress throughout the series.

Candidates for treatment

Microneedling is safe for all skin types. However, women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding should avoid treatment. We also advise anyone with open lesions such as cold sores or cystic acne to wait on the procedure until their skin has healed.
