Angela Raymer, MBA, RT(R), program coordinator, Parkview Heart Institute, and Jill Zahm, MSN, RN, AHN-BC, program coordinator, Parkview Heart Institute, discuss the physical and mental health benefits of drumming. Whether done alone or in a group, the meditative practice can help those facing stress associated with a diagnosis or the challenges that come with day-to-day routines.

Steps for contributing to a successful drum circle experience:

  • Show up for yourself
  • Establish group trust
  • Choose your instrument
  • Participate in creating sounds
  • Be Aware of the drummers around you
  • Observe their behavior and expression
  • Check in with each other
  • Accept help from others
  • Alter your place to help others find theirs
  • Carry the experience beyond the circle
