A full week of workouts inspired by Rio

With the outstanding performances given by all of the Team USA athletes in Rio, it’s hard not to feel inspired to get moving. In the spirit of the summer sports that have captured our attention in recent days, Mackenzie Clark, MS, LAT, ATC, athletic training lead, Parkview Sports Medicine, has assembled five days worth of workouts fashioned after a few of our favorite events.

Whether you’re looking to start a workout routine or just try something different, these options will have you breaking a sweat just like your athletic heroes!

Monday. The cycling events in Rio were full of excitement, but you don’t have to be a world champion to enjoy the sport. You can try this workout indoors or outdoors. If you’re cycling outdoors, always wear a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing.  This workout is for all fitness levels.


Tuesday. Who isn’t motivated by Michel Phelp’s incredible hard work and dedication to his sport? This workout is inspired by his fast freestyle stroke, and is best for intermediate-advanced fitness levels.

For those not as comfortable in deep water, here’s a shallow water workout for all fitness levels.


Wednesday. Whether you enjoyed watching Usain Bolt sprint down the track or Shalane Fanagan conquer the marathon, this workout is great for speed and endurance. Choose between the intermediate-advance or beginner level.


Thursday. Ah, the Final Five … Simone Biles and the rest of the American gymnasts have been a thrill to watch! You won’t find any tumbling or high-flying twists in this workout, but it is designed to build power, a talent we saw from this group of women day after day. These strength skills are great for all fitness levels.


Friday. Although not as popular as some of the other sports, a boxing workout can a lot of fun and a great way to burn a lot of calories. This workout is for all fitness levels.
