Reducing costs. Improving lives. Transforming healthcare.
Parkview Health, in collaboration with Hylant and Butler University, invites global innovators to join the fifth installment of its innovation competition, the Healthy Care, Healthy Costs Innovation Challenge—a bold initiative aimed at reducing preventable healthcare costs and improving outcomes for high-risk populations through scalable, forward-thinking solutions.
Our focus
Indiana consistently ranks among the 10 least healthy states in the U.S., grappling with high rates of chronic disease, significant health disparities, and avoidable hospitalizations. During the recent Total Cost of Care Data Challenge, student teams from Butler University analyzed Medicaid data, uncovering critical trends and identifying the urgent need for preventive strategies. These include interventions that address chronic conditions, behavioral health, and social determinants of health—particularly among aging adults and rural populations.
Key insights include:
- Over 30% of Indiana seniors experience a fall each year, leading to serious injuries and costly hospitalizations.
- Only 1 in 4 adults aged 65+ meet recommended physical activity guidelines, contributing to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
- One-third of adults skip or delay care due to cost, even when insured—driving up emergency care use and worsening chronic conditions.
- Many rural counties in Indiana have only one primary care provider, leading to care delays and preventable complications.
Together, these findings highlight the cost of inaction—and the opportunity for bold, innovative solutions to reshape the future of care delivery.
