Infection Prevention Fellowship

A fellowship program for individuals pursuing careers in infection prevention

The Parkview Infection Prevention Fellowship is a one to two-year hospital-based fellowship that provides an opportunity to students who are pursuing a Master degree, to work in a flexible role during school and prepares them for a career in infection prevention upon graduation. The fellowship program will have up to two fellows per year. Fellows will work flexible hours, onsite at Parkview Regional Medical Center.

Program details

Infection Preventionists (IPs) are specially trained professionals and dedicated specialists in healthcare whose primary responsibility is to prevent the spread of infections. This is a 24-40 hours a week, paid, benefited fellowship. On completion, fellows will have obtained their Certificate in Infection Control (CIC) and have hands-on work experience in an Infection Prevention Department.

  • Surveillance Basics and Reporting Requirements
  • Quality, Safety and Infection Prevention
  • The Regulatory Requirement of Infection Prevention
  • Creating an Infection Control Plan: Facility Risk Assessments and Goal Development
  • Outbreaks & Exposures 101
  • NHSN Criteria and Surveillance
  • Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization: Environment of Care, Endoscopy & High-Level Disinfection
  • Infection Prevention in the Surgical/Procedural Setting
  • Antimicrobial Resistance & Stewardship
  • Construction, Design & Renovation
  • Waterborne Pathogens & Healthcare Implications
  • Infection Prevention in Dialysis, Ambulatory Care/Surgery Settings and Behavioral Health
  • Practicum
  • Capstone projects 
Compensation

This is a paid, benefited position within the Parkview Infection Prevention department. The fellowship program will cover the cost of the standard Infection Prevention training. Additionally, fellows will be reimbursed for the cost of the CIC test after providing proof of obtaining their CIC.

Eligibility requirements

Must have completed Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related field; and be enrolled in or have completed a Master’s program. They must be able to work onsite in Fort Wayne, IN at Parkview Regional Medical Center and commute for occasional training experiences at other Parkview facilities. In addition, fellows must complete all pre-hire requirements (criminal background check, drug testing, etc.) per Human Resources’ deadline. Must have good verbal and written communication skills. Ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and will be an efficient and effective problem solver. Must be able to work flexible hours, 24 to 40 hours a week, if necessary. Ability to effectively facilitate educational sessions to various audiences. Must be able to educate others using various methods (such as classroom, web based, paper, etc.) On completion, Fellows will have obtained their Certificate in Infection Control (CIC) and have hands-on work experience in an Infection Prevention Department.

Preferred:

Three years of work experience in any field and/or completion of internship in health-related field.

GPA of 3.00 or above and completion of a medical terminology course.
