Dr. Miry Lanphere, MD, Pediatrics, Parkview Kosciusko Hospital, explains how routine check-ups instill confidence and set children up for a healthy life.

Well-Child Visits play an essential role in ensuring children’s health and well-being. These regular check-ins give parents and providers a chance to connect, track development and celebrate milestones, all while addressing any questions or concerns along the way.

What happens at a Well-Child Visit

Each visit takes a whole-child approach, looking at their physical, emotional and social health. Providers review growth, behavior, nutrition, development and safety. Parents can also discuss anything new or concerning.

The frequency of these appointments changes as children grow:

Before the appointment, parents often complete an online questionnaire that covers topics like diet, activity level, safety practices (such as helmet and car seat use) and home environment. This helps the care team personalize the visit.

During the appointment, a nurse or medical assistant starts by recording the child’s height, weight and vital signs. The provider then performs a head-to-toe exam, listening to the heart and lungs, checking ears, mouth and abdomen, and assessing mobility and strength. Depending on the child’s age, the provider may also screen for scoliosis.

Vaccines are a standard part of Well-Child Visits. These immunizations follow evidence-based schedules proven to be safe and effective. For children with anxiety or sensory sensitivities, providers take extra time, explaining each step and encouraging comfort items like a favorite toy or headphones.

Referrals and resources

If a referral is needed (for example, to an eye doctor or specialist), the provider discusses the reason and helps coordinate next steps. Many referrals within the same health system can be processed quickly, while others, like dentist visits, can be scheduled directly by parents.

How parents can help

Parents play a big part in helping children feel safe during these visits. Staying calm and positive shows kids that the clinic is a secure place. Talking ahead of time about what to expect or asking if there’s something they’d like to discuss can help them feel more in control.

Building healthy habits for life

Regular Well-Child Visits help children become comfortable with healthcare from an early age. Over time, they learn that doctor visits aren’t something to fear, they’re a way to stay strong and healthy.
