Dr. Abdo M. Saad, Gastroenterology, explains how the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has evolved over the past 30 years to enhance the quality of life for individuals affected by this condition.
We first used a few medications like prednisone and azathioprine, and while these medications were helpful, they carried certain risks and side effects. The introduction and implementation of biologic therapy has since revolutionized the treatment of IBD. These biologic treatments are given as infusions or injections that, over time, have improved to better target inflammation in the GI tract.
Later, due to the convenience of the injection or infusion, we devised more effective treatments that were developed into oral tablets. Instead of an infusion every two months or every two weeks, patients can now take a daily medication at home. This makes activities like travel easier, since the patient doesn't have to be bound to a hospital or infusion center.
