Among the many stories of gratitude this season, Operation Honor was created to recognize and honor Parkview patients who are veterans. What began as an idea between co-workers has grown into a heartfelt tradition that brings dignity and comfort to those who have served.
The inspiration came from a team member who, after a personal experience with their father and a memorable moment with a patient and their family, brought forward a simple yet powerful idea to ensure veterans are acknowledged and appreciated throughout their care journey. That idea sparked a collaborative effort across departments, evolving into what is now known as Operation Honor.
Veteran patients are offered a card outside their door and a flag to take home, with care taken to respect their wishes. In the Medical ICU, where patients often transition to comfort care, veterans receive a hand-tied American flag fleece blanket. If a veteran passes away or is transferred to acute care, a Final Salute is offered. During this ceremony, the patient is escorted by Public Safety, draped in their blanket, while staff and families line the hallway in silent tribute. As a final sign of respect, those present place their hands over their hearts while the veteran is wheeled through. The family is invited to follow the cart to the elevator, offering a quiet and meaningful moment to say their final goodbye.
The emotional impact of this gesture has been deeply felt. One family shared how honored and moved they were by the tribute, expressing how much it meant to see their loved one recognized in such a meaningful way. The image of the blanket draped over the veteran as he was wheeled downstairs left a lasting impression on everyone present.
Now known as Operation Honor, the project has grown to include support from departments across Parkview, including Chaplaincy, Palliative Care, Public Safety, and the Foundation, all working together to ensure veterans are honored with compassion and respect. It’s a powerful example of what happens when co-workers unite around a shared purpose: to serve those who have served us.
