Healthy Mind

Dave Johnson, PhD, CNS, BC, LMFT, Parkview Center for Healthy Living, invites us to see final moments as sacred rather than sad.

Sometimes when I teach mindfulness, I talk about the last sip. You know, the last sip goes unnoticed because oftentimes we're over the coffee by the time we get to the end of it. And so it is with our lives.

Often, we're onto the next thing, the next event, the next degree, the next job, the next, the next, the next. But what about the sacredness in the last? The last time you put a kid to bed and said goodnight prayers before they got too big for you to tuck them in. Or the last time you called a particular house your home.

Maybe it's my age, but I'm doing a lot of reflection on the lasts. And working to shift from focusing on the last as a source of sadness, but rather, a sacredness about the ending of one thing and the beginning of something new.
