Northfield's heroics did it again. This time, leading to a state championship.
Addie Baker hit a solo home run in the top of the 6th inning and added a two-run homer in the 7th to lift the Lady Norse past Clay City, 3-1, in the IHSAA 1A State Championship on Friday, June 11.
It marks the first state title for any girls sport at Northfield, and accompanies the softball program's first sectional, regional and semi-state titles won this spring, too.
The first three innings remained scoreless on both sides, turning into a pitchers' dual. Clay City would get on the board first in the 4th inning.
Defensive plays, including a diving catch from outfielder Kyra Kennedy kept Northfield in the game, allowing Addi to leave her mark in the 6th inning.
Addi was also named the 2A Mental Attitude Award winner.
Abby Hunter pitched another gem for Northfield. She went all 7 innings, giving up 4 hits and striking out 6 Clay City batters. Her diving catch in the infield recorded the final out, which secured the state title for the Norse.
