Improvements are in store for the South Side High School Athletic Annex later this year.
Plans approved by the Fort Wayne Community Schools board on April 27 include a new softball field and new press box near current Archer sports facilities across from where Elmhurst High School once stood on Sand Point Road.
“This project will provide a great opportunity for the students of South Side High School and the community,” athletic director Torrey Curry said in a statement. “South Side high School is highly appreciative of the support of the district and the school board.”
The softball diamond will be relocated just south of the baseball field, according to renderings of the project. Wooden dugouts with metal roofs will be added for teams to be able to sit. The field of play will have a southwest orientation from home plate towards centerfield.

The new press box will replace the existing one, and will be shared by both the baseball and softball fields. Windows on either side and separate public address systems will be part of the new setup.
No significant changes are slated for Derbyshire Baseball Field.
Construction will include clearing of some of a portion of the woods where the new softball field. Additionally, FWCS will work with the Indiana Department of Natural resources to relocate a nearby wetlands, district officials say.
The $890,500 project is expected to be finished by November 1.
