Gerb Court

Eastside Junior/Senior High School has memorialized the contributions to Blazer athletics with the renaming of the high school basketball floor to Gerb Court

Bob GerberGerb Court is named for former Eastside athlete, coach and athletic supporter Robert Gerber, who died August 13 at the age of 72. The court was dedicated December 17 during a boys and girls basketball doubleheader against Lakewood Park Christian. About 40 members of Gerb's family were there, as well as several former Eastside players and coaches who knew Gerb well. The Blazers beat the Panthers in both games.

"He's always been connected to Eastside," athletic director/assistant principal Aaron Willard tells ParkviewSportsMedicine.com. "Basketball was his love, and being around Eastside basketball was his life."

Bob Gerber 1966Gerb graduated from Eastside in 1966, helping the 4-year-old school to its first boys basketball sectional championship his senior year (despite an 8-10 regular season). Gerb started coaching around Eastside in 1981, working with junior high and high school - boys and girls - over 30 years; including Eastside's other 3 boys sectional titles in 1993, 2007 and 2010.

Gerb was willing to help out where needed, even help coach golf and cross country, too.

In coaching retirement, the Butler community could often find Gerb in the bleachers at mid-court of the floor that now bears his name.

"I trusted him," Willard adds. "Gerb was a lot of different things to me. He was a role model in a lot of different ways. A father figure was one of those in my personal life. His family and my family are very close."

The idea of dedicating Gerb Court was championed by superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Stephens and the DeKalb County Eastern Community School district board, Willard says.

"Basketball and Gerb go hand-in-hand," he beams.
