Lady Lions fall in 4A state title game
June 8, 2019
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Leo Lady Lions' run to a state title halted Saturday night with a 1-0 loss to Center Grove in the 4A championship game at Bittinger Stadium, the home of Purdue University softball.
Center Grove (28-3) scored the lone run in the first inning of what became a pitchers' duel. The Trojans' run came on a pop fly that Leo dropped in the outfield, allowing a baserunner to score. The play was recorded as an error.
Center Grove's pitching stymied a Leo offense that averaged 9.8 runs per game coming in. CG struck out a total of 12 Leo batters, allowing just 3 Leo hits. Two of those hits came off the bat of Kiley Patterson. The catcher shined on defense, too, throwing out a Center Grove runner's attempted steal, and recording a key pop out of a Center Grove batter later in the.
Center Grove's victory gives the Trojans a state record 7th state title. Leo's trip to the state finals was the 3rd in 6 years - and a first in Class 4A. The Lions won the 2014 state championship and were 2015 state runners-up.
Leo senior Ellenor Schelm won the 4A Mental Attitude Award. A member of National Honor Society, Schelm will attend Ball State University and study nursing.
