Gilbert elected to Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame

December 12, 2017

NEW CASTLE, Ind. - Former Heritage basketball coach and athletic director Cheri Gilbert has been elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Gilbert is one of 12 inductees in the Class of 2018 that will be added on April 28, 2018.

Gilbert retired last summer after 39 years at Heritage High School. She served as girls basketball coach from 1977 to 1987. Heritage’s 1982 state championship is not only the school’s lone state title in any sport, but the smallest school by enrollment ever to win the IHSAA crown in the one-class era.

Her 10 years as head coach included 3 semi-states, 3 regionals, 5 sectionals and 5 Allen County Athletic Conference titles. She also coached 1983 Miss Indiana Basketball Jody (Beerman) Kelley, who was enshrined in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. Heritage won 80 percent of its games under Gilbert.

Gilbert served as Heritage athletic director from 2010 to 2017.

A Woodlan High School graduate, Gilbert (nee Shanebrook) played volleyball and softball in the Girls Athletic Association before the IHSAA sponsored girls sports.
