Wayne has elevated assistant coach Anthony Brewer to head coach of the General boys basketball team.
“Taking over here at Wayne is extremely special,” Brewer tells PSM. “For them to kind of take a chance on an assistant coach is major.”
Brewer’s hiring was approved October 9 by the Fort Wayne Community Schools board.
Brewer served as an assistant for the previous years under Byron Pickens, who stepped down in the offseason due to a family move. Wayne finished 21-5 last year, winning the first Summit Athletic Conference title in 23 seasons (first outright since 1976), a sectional title for the first time since 1994 and a regional title for the first time since 1981.
“Brew was always the energy guy,” guard Jevon Lewis, Jr., says of the Generals’ deep postseason run a year ago. “He was there when we won four games, he was there when we won 21. He knows the family. We all trust him.”
Brewer spent years as an assistant coach in the Fort Wayne area. Hewas on the Concordia coaching staff for 10 years, including the 2013 3A state runner-up team. He has also spent years coaching in Gym Rats Basketball Association. He played high school basketball and football at North Side High School.
“Brew always told us that he always wanted to be a head coach,” guard Chase Barnes adds. “He’s been there Day 1 with us. We’re very excited to have him as our coach.”
Lewis (16.6 points, 6.4 assists and 2.1 steals per game) and Barnes (13.9 points, 3.3 rebounds) are two of several key players who return this season. Both were selected 1st Team All-SAC last season.
“We’ve come a long way already,” says Brewer. “We’re excited about what we can accomplish this season coming up.”
