Merryman named Northrop boys basketball coach

Northrop High School has found its new boys basketball coach.

Shane Merryman was announced as the new Bruins leader on Monday, following his approval by the Fort Wayne Community Schools board.

Merryman is being elevated to head coach after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach. Before his time at Northrop, Merryman was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Carroll High School. This is his first head coaching job.



Merryman, who stands 6’5”, had an accomplished playing career at Carroll and then Huntington University.  At Carroll, he was an All-Northeast Hoosier Conference, All-Area and All-State Honorable Mention player who led the Chargers to three NHC championships and a semi-state appearance in 2010. 

At Huntington, Merryman averaged 16.2 points per game for his career, finishing 7th all-time in Forester history with 2,025 career points. He earned All-Crossroads League 1st Team honors as a junior and senior,  NAIA All-America 3rd Team as junior and 2nd team as a junior, and was an NAIA Scholar Athlete. The Foresters qualified for the NAIA National Tournament his senior year.

 

Merryman is a physical education teacher within the district, as well.
