Brain health refers to how well your brain functions cognitively, as well as through motor, emotional and sensory abilities. Just as we care for our physical health, it’s important to nurture our brain health. What you may not realize is that many of the habits that support your physical or cardiovascular health also benefit your brain.
Priority No. 1 – Movement
To maintain or improve brain health, aim for at least 150 minutes of cardiovascular activity each week, such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling or swimming. If you can’t fit in 30 minutes at a time, shorter bursts of movement throughout the day still make a difference. The key is to stay active.
Priority No. 2 – Diet
Consider following eating patterns like the DASH or Mediterranean diets, focusing on leafy greens, nuts, berries, fish and healthy fats such as avocado or olive oil. Limit fast food, sweets, sugary drinks, alcohol and red meat.
Priority No. 3 – Mental well-being
Finally, prioritize your mental well-being by addressing concerns such as anxiety, depression or PTSD with the support of a healthcare provider.
Bonus habits for a healthier brain
To maintain optimal brain function, it’s also important to:
- Maintain healthy blood pressure (below 120/80 mmHg)
- Get seven to eight hours of quality sleep
- Nurture social connections
- Keep your mind sharp with hobbies, puzzles or learning a new language
