As an OB/GYN, a lot of what we do from a primary care standpoint is catching things like cervical cancer before those abnormalities turn into cancer.

Why do women need pap smears and HPV tests regularly?

Pap and HPV testing is extremely important because cervical cancer is one of the cancers that we can test for before those cells even become cancerous.

How frequently should I be tested?

With a few exceptions, pap tests should begin at age 21 for all women, and then from the ages of 21 to 30, we recommend pap smears every three years. Then starting at the age of 30 up until the age of 65, we recommend cervical cancer screening with pap smears and HPV testing every five years.

There are instances when we do pap smears more frequently, but for the most part, pap smears should be covered by your insurance.
