Halloween is a time for costumes, celebrations and plenty of treats. Enjoying this or any other holiday doesn’t mean putting your healthy habits on hold. With a few simple strategies, you can have fun while still feeling your best.
Don’t save your appetite for candy. Eat balanced meals throughout the day that include protein, fiber, fruits and vegetables. Skipping meals to “save calories” can leave you overly hungry and more likely to overindulge later.
Choose your favorites. Instead of eating candy just because it’s available, pick the treats you truly enjoy. Slow down and savor them without guilt.
Make movement part of the fun. Walking while trick-or-treating is an easy way to stay active. Turn up some Halloween music for a family dance party or take an extra lap around the neighborhood.
Have a plan for the leftover candy. After Halloween, let everyone choose a reasonable number of favorite treats to keep, then consider giving the rest away. Donate unopened candy to a local food pantry, community organization, school, workplace or candy collection program. You can also freeze some for later, using them for baking or holiday treats. You always have the option of throwing away candy your family doesn’t enjoy. Keeping a large bowl on the counter for weeks can make mindless snacking much more tempting.
Most importantly, remember that wellness includes enjoying special occasions. Enjoy the candy, costumes, and time with family and friends—then simply return to your usual routine. Balance, not perfection, is what makes Halloween both spooky and smart!
