Getting a good night's rest is undoubtedly one of the most impactful drivers of long-term health, yet many of us struggle to drift off, stay asleep or maintain a steady bedtime routine. Over time, we may grow accustomed to these problems, but they can drastically deplete our energy levels and how we show up each day.

In this series, our PPG-Sleep Medicine providers offer professional perspectives on achieving more uninterrupted, refreshing sleep. In this installment, Amanda Schraeger, NP, discusses the power of position.

Three things that can assist with sleep apnea symptoms.

Position therapy: You can decrease your sleep apnea symptoms by positional therapy. A lot of people have most of their events on their back. As they're lying on their back, their tongue falls back, causing those events to occur. For this reason, turning onto the side can help reduce instances.

Weight loss: If you are carrying excessive weight on your body, the weight can cause obstruction around the neck and throat but also make it difficult for your lungs to ventilate. Healthy weight loss can do wonders for sleep apnea symptoms.

Clean up your sleep hygiene: Ineffective breathing and poor sleep hygiene can be problematic for sleep apnea. Getting good quality, consistent sleep can be very helpful to assist with your symptoms. Brush up on good sleep hygiene habits here.
