Melatonin is a hormone that already exists in our body. The natural form, endogenous melatonin, is produced automatically, while the exogenous form of melatonin is supplemental. These supplements come in immediate release, extended release, capsules and gummies.  

The benefits

The pros of melatonin are:  

  • it helps promote sleepiness.
  • Some studies show that it has some brain protective assets, with an antioxidant-type characteristic for the brain.
  • It can help regulate your menstrual cycle.
  • It's a natural supplement (which can be a con as well).

The pitfalls

The cons of melatonin supplementation are:

  • Since it’s a supplement, melatonin not technically FDA regulated. So, you really have to look at what type of melatonin you're getting and make sure that it is a quality product.

  • Ongoing studies are exploring the potential effect melatonin can have on the heart and whether or not it can interact negatively with the organ’s function. If you are concerned about your heart health, we highly recommend you talk to cardiologist and practice a shared decision-making approach.

Keep in mind, we don’t recommend using melatonin for extended periods of time. This is something just to help you fall asleep as needed. If you're having long-term effects or persistent issues with sleep, it’s best to come to the Sleep Medicine Clinic.
