Leah Hall, MA, LMHC, clinical programs manager, Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, clues us into the power of taking a slow, deep breath.
Life moves fast and emotions can feel overwhelming, but you can pause and breathe. Let's try a simple technique called pursed-lip breathing. It's easy and you can do it anywhere.
How to do the pursed-lip breathing technique:
1. Start by sitting comfortably with your feet on the floor and relaxing your shoulders.
2. Now gently inhale through your nose for two counts. One, two.
3. Next, purse your lips as if you're blowing out a candle and exhale slowly for four counts. One, two, three, four.
4. Repeat
Notice your body softening, your shoulders relaxing, your mind slowing down. Even just a few rounds of this breathing can help you feel more grounded.
Remember that breathing won't erase your emotions, but it can help lower their intensity, giving you the space to respond instead of react.
