Healthy Mind

Laura Murphy, director of clinical services, Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, reminds us of the importance of mental healthcare, and offers steps for a quick self-check-in.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet many are hesitant to talk about it. It's human nature to struggle with mental health. At some point in our life, we all experience periods of anxiety, stress, sadness and depression. This ability to feel deeply is what makes us human, but without the right tools, it can also make life feel overwhelming.

As we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month this May, we’re excited to introduce a monthly series of videos, which will offer useful tools, techniques and resources to help manage some common issues that we all face in life.

A brief check-in

We all want to be mentally well, and a mental health check-in is a simple and powerful way to stay connected with yourself and others. Follow these simple steps to conduct a check-in:

  • Start by finding a quiet space.
  • Take a few deep breaths and ask yourself, how am I feeling today?
  • Write down your thoughts or share them with someone you trust. It's important to acknowledge both positive and challenging feelings as they come up.

A final takeaway that I’ll mention is how important it is to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Remember, self-care is an important part of maintaining mental health.

Remember, it's okay to seek help if you need it. You are not alone.
