The Parkview Youth Well-being team created a series of healthy habits, simple to apply to everyday life. In this video, Kenzie McLaughlin, OTD, OTR/L, youth well-being coordinator, Parkview Health, discusses the vital need to prioritize rest and restoration.
Sleep is something we all need to stay healthy and feel good. Sleep helps our bodies grow, which is why kids need more sleep than adults. Sleep also gives us the energy we need to feel ready to play, learn and have fun. It helps your brain learn and remember all the things you did that day so you can do your best.
Have you ever felt grumpy or sick after you did not sleep enough?
A good night's rest helps our mood, helps us recognize hunger and fullness cues and helps our body fight off germs to heal and stay healthy. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep each night to be your happiest and healthiest you.
Does getting at least eight hours of rest seem hard to you?
Try these tips:
- Go to bed around the same time every night to help your body know when it's time to rest.
- Try not to use electronics such as TV tablets or video games for at least hour before bed because the light from screens can make it harder to fall asleep.
- Talk to your adult at home about creating a bedtime routine. This might be taking a warm shower or bath, reading a book or listening to calming music.
Sleep is like charging your battery. The more sleep you get, the more energy you have to enjoy your day. Do your best at school and play with friends.
Can you share this healthy habit with someone at home? What might you do before bed to get ready for a good night's rest?
