Healthy Habit No. 4 – Positive self-talk

The Parkview Youth Well-being team created a series of healthy habits, simple to apply to everyday life. In this video, Michele Schnelker, youth well-being coach, pumps children up for building self-confidence.

Positive self-messages, positive affirmations and positive self-talk all mean the same thing. Our thoughts are silent and live in our brains, but we can also say them out loud like:

"I am funny.”

“I am a good friend.”

“I am smart.”

“I am beautiful or handsome."

These are examples of four positive self-messages.

So why does this matter?

How do you think we'd be affected if we were our own cheerleader versus if we bullied ourselves all day? If we're constantly thinking positive thoughts about ourselves, our mood and our mental health are more likely to be better. Just like on the flip side, if there's a bully between our ears all day, our mood and our mental health are going to take a dive.

Research shows that positive self-talk improves how well our brain works and helps our ability to manage and control our feelings and emotions. This helps us with life skills, including making friends, learning and making decisions. Folks who speak positively to themselves show more confidence and experience less anxiety.

Can you share this healthy habit with someone at home? What is a positive thought you can say to yourself?
