IHSAA, Indiana Department of Education outline "re-entry" into high school athletics

June 9, 2020

The Indiana Department of Education unveiled a series of considerations for reopening schools - and resuming high school athletics starting in July.

The state's  COVID-19 Health and Safety Re-Entry Guidance is part of the larger Indiana Considerations For Learning and Safe Schools (IN-CLASS) that provides Indiana districts and schools with guidelines for daily operations of buildings, medical measures for infectuous disease control and and participation in extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

"The conditions, current medical landscape, and growing body of knowledge surrounding COVID-19 continue to evolve," the Indiana Department of Education said in a statement accompanying the guidance. "This reality presents challenges to planning, preparing, and guiding school operations."

For sports, this means a three-phase re-entry plan starting July 6 and running through August 15. Below is the full list of directives included in the IN-CLASS document:

After originally eyeing a July 1 start date for summer athletic activities, IN-CLASS Phase 1 guidance for athletics has pushed back the start date to July 6.

The first day of practice for girls golf (June 31), first day of girls golf competition (August 3), first day of other practices for other fall sports (August 3) and first day of competition for other fall sports (August 15) remain as scheduled, the IHSAA confirmed.
