Trine University is starting a women's wrestling program that will compete starting in the 2020-21 school year, the school has announced.
"We are excited to announce another opportunity for women athletes to compete at the collegiate level at Trine," Thunder assistant vice president for athletics Matt Land says. "Women's wrestling is a growing sport and we are proud that women across the region will have a new opportunity to compete."
The addition of women's wrestling at Trine comes after the NCAA's Committee on Women's Athletics recommended that all three divisions of the NCAA include women's wrestling as an emerging sport starting August 1, 2020. To date, more than 70 universities nationwide, including 24 in the NCAA and 6 in Division III, sanction women's wrestling. Trine becomes the first NCAA school in Indiana to sponsor the sport.
A search has already begun to find Trine women's wrestling's first head coach.
