FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Blackhawk Christian School has announced that Head Boys Soccer coach Bob Freeborn will be retiring from his coaching responsibilities after 34 years as head coach of the program. He will remain in his position as a teacher in the school.
“It has always been our goal as a program to field a competitive team that would compete with other high school teams and to be good corporate citizens within the local soccer community,” Freeborn said. “The decision to step away from head coaching was incredibly difficult, but it is time for someone to come in with a new, fresh look at things and see what they can do. I Thank God and the Blackhawk Christian administration for giving me the opportunity to lead this program for so many years. All of my assistant coaches, players, and other coaches in the soccer community have made my life so much richer. I have a lot to be thankful for.”
Freeborn began his Blackhawk Christian coaching career as the head coach in 1985. He reached career milestones of 598 games coached and 271 career wins over the 34-year span. The Braves won their first Sectional championship in 2008 and went on to win six Sectional titles under Coach Freeborn’s leadership. Blackhawk Christian boys soccer also won regional titles in 2014 and 2015, with the 2015 team ending their tournament run in the Final 4.
“It is not too often that you have a coach that remains dedicated to one place for over three decades and this school community has been blessed because of Bob’s leadership of our soccer program,” Blackhawk Christian athletic director Joel Cotton stated. “Bob Freeborn built our soccer program by investing year after year into the lives of the students that have come through our school. He is leaving behind a legacy and tradition in boys soccer that we can continue for future teams. His teams represented the competitive effort and team attitude that we strive for as a department.”
The search for a new coach will begin immediately.
