FORT WAYNE, IND. – The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne is teaming up with Parkview Sports Medicine to bring “Active Science at the Y with Jaylon Smith” to its after school programs. Active Science blends physical activity with hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning concepts to create opportunities for children to play, explore and discover. The free program will be offered during the 2017 – 2018 school year for students in grades K – 5 who are enrolled in Y programs. At the close of the school year, students and their families will be invited to an end-of-season celebration with Jaylon Smith, Dallas Cowboys linebacker and Bishop Luers High School graduate.
“With more than 1,500 students in our after school programs, we’re very excited about the opportunity to engage youth and their families in an active lifestyle, while also strengthening the educational component of our programs,” said Chris Angellatta, chief operating officer, YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne. “We are fortunate to have partners like Parkview and Jaylon Smith who also care about the well-being of our community, and we look forward to working with them in the fight against childhood obesity.”
The Active Science program works by allowing students to collect data during physical activity using pedometers and accelerometers. Students then input their real-time data into the Active Science application on a mobile tablet, which engages them in experiential learning as they explore STEM concepts using their own personal data. As progress is recorded, students are able to unlock games, compete on a Leaderboard and earn rewards and prizes.
“Physical inactivity is a major contributor to childhood obesity,” said Tommy Schoegler, director, Parkview Sports Medicine. “This program pairs physical activity with fun games and learning opportunities to challenge students both physically and academically, all while engaging them in their well-being.”
Pre- and post-assessments are seamlessly integrated into each lesson to track the academic gains of those who participate. The STEM curriculum aligns with the national Next Generation Science Standards for kindergarten through grade five. To learn more about Active Science, visit www.activescienceforkids.org.
