Parkview Ortho Express opens at SportONE / Parkview Fieldhouse, offers region’s only certified sports dietetics using iDXA body composition analysis

FORT WAYNE, IND. – Parkview Ortho Express will open at the SportONE / Parkview Fieldhouse on Tuesday, August 1. Under the direction of Joseph Mattox, MD, medical director, Parkview Sports Medicine, the nearly 4,000 square foot clinic will offer care for all types of musculoskeletal injuries, with an emphasis on sports medicine. Additional services include physical therapy, sports nutrition counseling, x-ray services and referrals to orthopedic specialists.

The clinic will also house a registered dietician who is the area’s only board certified specialist in sports dietetics, as well as dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (iDXA) body composition analysis, which will allow patients to view total body metrics such as body fat percentage, total fat tissue and bone mineral content. This combination of a board certified sports dietetics specialist with the iDXA body composition analysis will offer patients a unique service unavailable anywhere else in the region.

The iDXA scan takes approximately 6-12 minutes and is completely painless, using a low-dose x-ray with both a low energy beam and a high energy beam. The low energy beam gets absorbed by the soft tissue (muscle and fat) and the high energy beam is absorbed by both the soft tissue and the bones. The differences in absorption are then used to determine body composition values.

“The iDXA scan is the gold standard for locating lean and fat body mass,” said Mattox. “The scan can guide treatment decisions and serve as an excellent motivational tool for those tracking weight loss, nutrition, rehabilitation, exercise or overall health. We look forward to seeing the benefits this technology, combined with our sports nutrition services, will offer our athletes and those looking to improve their well-being.”

In addition to Dr. Mattox and a board certified registered dietician, the clinic will also be staffed by two advanced practice providers who specialize in orthopedics and radiologic technologists.

“Our registered dietician is board certified in sports dietetics by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. She and the team’s expertise, paired with the capabilities of the iDXA, will set us apart from any other sports medicine provider in the area and put our services on par with major sports medicine programs across the nation,” Mattox added.

The clinic is located on the ground floor in the newly-expanded SportONE / Parkview Fieldhouse and includes four exam rooms, a physical therapy gym with six treatment tables, consult and radiology rooms and a cold whirlpool tank. Hours are currently 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturdays. The clinic will be closed on Wednesdays. The care team anticipates the clinic will eventually be open 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday as services grow at the facility.
