Parkview hospitals recognized for quality, safety outcomes for high-risk surgery patients

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Dec. 9, 2025 – The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) has recognized Parkview Regional Medical Center and Affiliates, which includes PRMC and Parkview Hospital Randallia hospitals, for meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2024.

Parkview was one of the 76 ACS NSQIP participating hospitals honored this year out of 609 eligible and was recognized in the ACS’s “high risk” category.

As a participant in ACS NSQIP, Parkview is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that assesses patient safety and can be used to direct improvement in the quality of surgical care.

“Parkview remains hyper-focused on maintaining the highest levels of quality and safety for our patients,” said Dr. Jeffrey Boord, chief quality and safety officer, Parkview Health. “By collecting, analyzing and acting on data, Parkview can proactively prevent complications before, during and after surgical procedures. These efforts create better outcomes for patients and generate cost savings by reducing preventable complications and readmissions.”

The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving a meritorious composite score in either an “all cases” category or a category that includes higher-risk cases. Risk-adjusted data from the July 2025 ACS NSQIP Semiannual Report, which presents data from the 2024 calendar year, were used to determine which hospitals demonstrated meritorious outcomes.

Each composite score was determined through a different weighted formula combining eight outcomes. The outcome performances related to patient management were in the following eight clinical areas: mortality; unplanned intubation; ventilator > 48 hours; renal failure; cardiac incidents (cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction); respiratory (pneumonia); SSI (surgical site infections-superficial and deep incisional and organ-space SSIs); and urinary tract infection.

ACS NSQIP is the preeminent nationally validated quality improvement program that measures and enhances the care of surgical patients. This program measures surgical results 30 days postoperatively as well as risk-adjusts patient characteristics to compensate for differences among patient populations and acuity levels. The goal of ACS NSQIP is to reduce surgical morbidity (infection or illness related to a surgical procedure) and surgical mortality (death related to a surgical procedure) and to provide a firm foundation for surgeons to apply what is known as the “best scientific evidence” to the practice of surgery.

“We’re proud to have our Allen County hospitals recognized among the top 10% of hospitals scored by the American College of Surgeons,” said Jerry Grannan, president, PRMC and Affiliates. “Our teams of physicians, surgeons, nurses and caregivers are dedicated to helping our patients during their procedures and through their recovery. Whether coming in for a minor procedure or a major surgery, patients can feel assured that Parkview performs among the best in the nation.”
